On today’s episode we share our conversation with Sara Hildreth of Fiction Matters! I’m sure all of you know Sara from her fabulous instagram account but Sara also runs a book club and is one of the partners of the Novel Pairings podcast! Sophie and I had so much fun asking Sara about how she began this journey (it’s a very interesting answer!) and what she’s learned along the way. After more than 300 women in the Mennonite colony of Molotschna were attacked between 20, eight of the settlement’s women, from the Loewen and Friesen families, gather secretly to discuss their plan of action in this powerful novel by Toews (All My Puny Sorrows). We had very strong reactions to this hot button novel that is the perfect book club book.

Jaclyn first joined us on episode 29 and we are grateful to have her back to share thoughts about this very buzzy book that was also a 2023 Academy Award nominee and won an Oscar for best adapted screenplay. Today we share our conversation about Women Talking by Miriam Toews and are thrilled to be joined by our first repeat guest, Jaclyn Masters. There’s been lots of buzz and op-eds in response to the New Yorker and we share our thoughts about those as well. The humanities are near and dear to both of our hearts and it’s hard to imagine either of our lives without literature and art as driving forces. On today’s episode, Sophie and I share our reactions to the recent New Yorker article The End of the English Major. Deb recently read Monsters and found it to be an intriguing look at this provocative question and given Sophie’s career in the art world, she had lots to add to this conversation. Join us for our thoughts on this tiny book that speaks volumes. From early themes of feminism, to our first introduction to Southern literature, to why this 1899 story still resonates today, we dug in.

We found this novel had just as much to say to us in 2023 as it did when we read it in our high school and college classrooms. On today’s episode, we share our thoughts about our April book, Kate Chopin’s The Awakening. We share a few shows that have become part of our ethos (some you will know, and some you may not!) and had so much fun reminiscing about some great watches.ĭeb also confesses a change of heart about a show she’s been raving about, and we change up our usual end matter categories! Today we are talking about what we love to watch when we aren’t reading! We are both very picky about what we turn on but we are fanatical about the shows we do love.
